Wishing everyone a Happy Independence Day !
Well, in many ways this wish sounds clichéd and oft-repeated every year with no meaning whatsoever.
Whom did we gain independence from and for what?
Our old enemies are no more dangerous. New enemies have sprung up everywhere.
No, I am not talking about those nations fighting underhanded battles through terrorism with us, or the hegemonistic nations holding us in their self-righteous clutches.
Our enemy is our ‘insensitivity’ to our surroundings.
In some ways the term ‘patriotism’ itself has become obsolete in this era of globalisation. This statement is not to belittle those brave brothers and sisters standing guard at the far-flung frontiers of each and every nation of this world.
But rather, I endeavor to see a true globalisation, in terms of shared resources, ideas and a vision for a cleaner and greener earth.
The globalisation of the financial kind is already at full throttle and unless it is matched with globalisation of humaneness and environmental awareness, this earth and this humanity is not going to be benefitted .
On one side we see swankier malls springing up everyday and on the other end of the spectrum we see the slums growing bigger and dirtier.
Can we draw a picture without a canvas ?
Can we build a future world without a healthy earth to sustain it ??
I think not.
Global warming, depleting resources, pollution, calamities, pandemic health crisis, greenhouse effect etc – these terms are no more confined to the vocabulary of a few highly qualified scientists. It has jumped out of research journals and science fictions into our everyday lives – the ramifications of which stare at us starkly now .
I hope and wish that we wake up to this reality at the earliest. We will not only be doing this earth and nature a favour ; we will infact be sefishly assuring that our children will be able to lead a happy and healthy life on this planet.
We have to ensure that the beauty and cleanliness of this irreplaceable creation is preserved for eternity.
In my opinion, the need of the hour at the grass roots level is public cleanliness and responsibility to our natural and civic surroundings.
I would like to use this blog as a forum for a fruitful dialogue to achieve this goal; not just a dialogue that will conclude in itself, but a dialogue that will spur on a result oriented action - immediately.
I request my social conscious friends to participate in this dialogue and act as a catalyst in this mission .
Shall We Be the Change ?
If we can’t, who can ?
